#1. Interpret/explore/explain the context and the significance of the quote “I don’t know if hope is white. But I do know that hope for me is like some mythical creature” (51). (Emilia N.)
When Arnold is Telling Rowdy that he is going to Rearden he thinks
about how special and how full of hope the Rearden students are and he thinks, “I
don’t know if hope is white. But I do know that hope for me is like some
mythical creature” (51) showing how hard chances and opportunities are to come
by in the ‘rez’. He uses a simile to explain how rare it is for him or for
Indians to be hopeful. He also talks about how sometimes white people can have
more hope than others. They are given more opportunities, they were ‘magnificent’
and ‘knew everything’ (50). Hope is hard to come across for Junior yet it is
almost a given for his white classmates.
